A recap is most useful when it helps someone perform the next task. Instead of reproducing the slides, connect the session’s concepts to the examples, questions and practice that made them understandable.
Begin with the task the learner should be able to do.
Write the learning objective as an observable action. “Understand the process” is broad. “Prepare a first draft using the agreed structure” gives the trainer and learner a result to inspect.
List prerequisites and the audience so a new reader knows whether the recap fits their starting point.
Keep the worked example and the common mistake.
For each main concept, include one practical example and the mistake it helps avoid. Link the relevant source material rather than duplicating every detail.
Separate questions answered in the session from questions that still need a response. Name the follow-up owner for the latter.
Make practice specific and achievable.
Choose an activity the learner can complete in their own context. State the expected output, the criteria for a useful attempt and how feedback will be provided.
| Field | What to specify |
|---|---|
| Task | What the learner will produce or demonstrate |
| Inputs | The materials or example they should use |
| Success check | The features of an acceptable attempt |
| Support | Who can answer a question |
| Feedback | When and how the attempt will be reviewed |
Use the next session to close the loop.
Begin by discussing what learners tried and where they became stuck. Update the recap if the same misunderstanding appears repeatedly. Keep the record of the session separate from an assessment of individual performance unless your programme explicitly includes that process.
